How medical marijuana stops brain cancer in its tracks

The world was saddened this week by the news that Tragically Hip frontman, Gord Downie, has terminal brain cancer. Downie is sadly suffering from Glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer.

As fans of this Canadian icon, and awareness advocates, we attempted to reach Downie to let him know about the incredible power of medical marijuana to stop and even reverse this type of brain cancer. Research has been incredible in proving the amazing effects of medical cannabis on all cancers, and in particular this one.

Over the past few years, research has revealed that marijuana can both destroy certain cancer cells and reduce the growth of others. Now, a new study in mice has found that when combined with radiation treatment, cannabis can effectively shrink one of the most aggressive types of brain tumors. [Huffington Post]

Researchers from this particular study (though there are dozens more), found that a “triple threat” to fighting brain cancer was incredibly effective. This triple threat approach combined traditional radiation use with THC and CBD cannabis compounds.

They found that the tumors were best treated by low doses of both THC and CBD that, when used in concert, made the tumors more receptive to radiation treatment. “Our data suggests a ‘triple threat’ approach using all three may be of value,” Liu told HuffPost.

In addition to reducing the brain tumours and preventing cancers from spreading, many oncology patients we currently work with also use cannabis to treat a number of cancer symptoms and radiation side effects:

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
