When it comes to taking your medical cannabis, you have many options: smoking, vaporizing, edibles, etc. Today we’re going to look at the major differences between smoking and vaporizing, and why we recommend one over the other.


  • Combustion creates smoke, which is a primary cause of lung cancer
  • Holding in the smoke absorbs more noxious chemicals into the lungs
  • Combusted smoke gases contain 88% non-cannabinoids


  • Vapor from medical marijuana in vaporizing is 95% smoke and carcinogen free
  • Vaporized marijuana consists of 95% cannabinoids
  • 95% of the THC in cannabis is absorbed in the first few seconds of inhaling

In comparing the two, we do always recommend that patients vaporize their medical marijuana instead of smoking it (though edibles are a great option, too). However, it’s important to note that the respiratory hazards of smoke are due to the toxic by-products of combustion and not the marijuana itself.
