The fastest-growing user base of medical marijuana, are adults in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Many seniors are trying cannabis for the first time, after having failed luck with pharmaceuticals for things like chronic pain, insomnia, depression and anxiety.
There is much misconception that medical cannabis causes euphoric effects, but products like CBD oils do not have this psychedelic effect. The stigma is lessening, and more and more patients are becoming educated on the benefits of medical cannabis, regardless of age. A great story in the Globe and Mail recently, profiled this increasing trend:
She thought about the four to six pills of Tylenol 3, laced with codeine, a narcotic analgesic, she took every day. She thought about her doctor’s suggestion that she try opioid painkillers. “You can get hooked on that.” So, she tried about 10 drops of CBD oil her husband had obtained from an unlicensed producer. Unlike THC – the psychoactive component in cannabis – pure CBD has medicinal properties without any “high.” The next day, she said, “there was no pain.” [Globe and Mail]
We see a large number of seniors in our clinic now, so these numbers are not surprising. Our free cooking classes, which show how to make edibles from medical marijuana, are also popular for seniors who are looking to ingest their medical cannabis in an easier and more discrete way.
